Cottage Life Program
The Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind (ISDB) is a state school established to educate qualifying students throughout the state of Idaho. ISDB provides a residential program for all students who do not live within commuting distance of the school. Typically, students arrive on campus Sunday evenings after 7:00 PM and report to their cottages. Students begin classes at 8:00 AM and are dismissed at 3:30 PM. Cottage hours are 3:30 PM until school begins the next morning. Students depart for home on Friday afternoons. Campus is closed to the public between the hours of 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
The Cottage Program is staffed at all times when students are present, including during the overnight hours. There are seven available cottages and students are grouped together by age and sex. Two cottages are designed and used for visually-impaired and blind students while five cottages are used by hearing-impaired and deaf students. Cottages average about eight students each and are modern, homelike structures with full kitchens, laundry facilities, TTYs, internet-ready computers, cable television and quiet study rooms. Nursing staff and security are provided into the evenings for cottage students and evening meals are catered to cottages by food service personnel.
The linguistically and culturally-rich environment provided to students residing in the cottage program is designed to supplement academic studies, learn life skills, as well as provide students with recreational opportunities. Homework Academy is provided to students after school, as well as ample time for studies. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the Recreational staff and cottage supervisors oversee the Electives Program in which all students participate. Hobbies and activities are promoted and students have the ability to choose among several offerings. Some of the electives activities include: outdoor skills, golf, plastic modeling, pottery/crafts, collecting, drama, community service, fishing, and technology.
