Service Based Learning
Service learning is new to ISDB this year. The concept of service learning is to provide an arena for students to recognize areas of need and help others, both on and off campus. As much as possible, service projects are connected to what is going on in the classroom. Suszan Reed is the service learning coordinator and meets with each group of students once a week. Elementary grades are involved monthly. Middle School students are involved through their PBL teachers.
The Middle and High School Blind/VI Group recently made 15 no-sew fleece pillows that were donated to the local "Nickel Toys for Girls and Boys". This organization allows low-income families to buy 3 toys/child at only 5 cents each. Duke and Donna Morton first developed this concept 14 years ago. All of the money is raised in Gooding, spent in Gooding and supports Gooding families in need.
Other activities have been: Scouting for food for the local food bank; raking leaves and taking them to the local brush yard; and recycling 125 paper boxes for the media department.
